Creativity and business combine in Medini’s Creative cluster, South East Asia’s modern destination for innovative artistic and technological endeavours.
The Creative cluster at Medini will be a hotbed of technology, innovation and creative business. The catalytic project of the sector is Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, formed as a collaboration between Khazanah Nasional Berhad and the famous Pinewood Studios, the UK studio in which iconic movies such as James Bond, Aliens, Harry Potter and The Bourne Ultimatum were filmed.
When it is completed in 2013, Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios will be the only integrated solution production facility in the Asia Pacific region. Set over 80 acres of land, it will offer 100,000 sq. ft. of film stages, 24,000 sq. ft. of TV studios as well as offices, workshops, post production facilities and a fully serviced 10 acre back-lot. The ‘under-one-roof’ facilities have been designed to attract large scale international productions. It is projected that the studio will have created over 10,000 jobs by 2020.
Directly adjacent to Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios is Media @ Medini, a creative mixed-use development that will house businesses that support and add value to television and film production. Media @ Medini will be a 24-hour environment, serviced by a unique mix of retail, food and beverage outlets on its high street.
Supported by local and federal government incentives, companies operating in and around the arts, such as film and design studios, animation firms, internet and technology companies will have exceptional opportunities for growth and business development in the Creative cluster. The ultimate aim is for the area to develop into a hub similar to those in California, London and Wellington
TOURISM & LEISURE
Tourism & Leisure will play a vital role in igniting regional awareness of Medini and Iskandar Malaysia.
Catalytic projects such as LEGOLAND® Malaysia are projected to make regular visitors of Singaporeans and Malaysians as well as attracting tourists from around the world. Being in such close proximity to Singapore, we expect a noticeable overlap of the roughly 12 million tourists that visit the city-state each year.
LEGOLAND® Malaysia, which is projected to open in Q4 2012, will be the first iconic Tourism & Leisure project in Iskandar Malaysia and the first international theme park in Malaysia. After detailed analysis, Legoland management identified Medini as the first site for a Legoland park in Asia because of its strategic position and the high visitor numbers it is projected to enjoy. Built over 76 acres, the park will feature more than 40 rides, shows and attractions.
A hit for younger children will be provided by The Family Entertainment Centre (TFEC), an indoor theme park located near Puteri Harbour. This RM350 million attraction features rides and well known characters from TV shows such as Barney™, Thomas & Friends™, Bob The Builder™ and Pingu™. These two parks serve as a complement, rather than competition, to Universal Studios in Singapore. LEGOLAND® Malaysia and TFEC’s target audiences are younger children and families, rather than thrill seeking teens and twenty-something’s. This synergistic harmony will benefit visitors to the region and the parks themselves.
More lies in store for visitors. Iskandar Malaysia has been designed as a holistic tourism destination: there is something for everyone. Adjacent to LEGOLAND® Malaysia is a 2 million sq. ft. mall that will house a LEGOLAND theme hotel and hundreds of retail stores, there are 17 golf courses in the region as well as spas and wellness attractions. Retail therapy can be found in abundance, led by Johor Premium Outlets, a shopping complex that boasts 80 designer and name-brand outlet stores.
For those interested in eco-tourism and nature, Johor’s mangrove forests and reserves will be a prime attraction. These tropical mangrove forests are highly diverse and are an important habitat for migratory and resident birds, fish, lizards and exotic species.
The surrounding eco-system developed to support the projected five million-tourists-per-year influx will create thousands of jobs and encourage other related businesses into Iskandar Malaysia. This virtuous circle is the basis of Iskandar Investment’s catalytic project strategy.
EduCity is the destination for educational excellence in the region. Its development has catalysed the influx of high-quality schools and universities into the Iskandar Malaysia.
Education has been pegged by the Malaysian government as one of 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs). Concessions and incentives at the federal and state level have already attracted renowned institutions, and it is expected that these and other premium tertiary establishments will inject a steady supply of well-educated graduates into the Malaysian workforce.
To accommodate the educational institutions, Iskandar Investment has created EduCity, a broad multi-campus community that boasts exceptional facilities. The catalytic nature of EduCity will attract business establishments to support the students, faculty and requirements of the institutions themselves. Cafes, shops, sports clubs, hotels and other such facilities will mushroom to accommodate the thousands who give and receive education in the community.
The list of educational establishments below represent confirmed developments that will be open and accepting students within the next two years:
- Newcastle University Medical Malaysia
- University of Southampton Malaysia
- University of Reading Malaysia
- Marlborough College Malaysia
- Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology
- Raffles University Iskandar
- Raffles American School
In line with these NKEAs, the Malaysian government has thrown its weight behind Iskandar Investment’s initiative to bring world-class education colleges and universities to the country. Concessions and incentives at the federal and state level have already attracted renowned institutions such as Newcastle University, the University of Southampton and the University of Reading. These and other premium tertiary establishments will inject a steady supply of well-educated graduates into the Malaysian workforce.
To accommodate the incoming educational institutions, Iskandar Investment has created EduCity, a broad multi-campus community that boasts exceptional facilities. The catalytic nature of EduCity will attract business establishments to support the students, faculty and requirements of the institutions themselves. Cafes, shops, sports clubs, hotels and other such facilities will mushroom to accommodate the thousands who give and receive education in the community.
HEALTHCARE & WELLNESS
The Healthcare & Wellness cluster is anchored by Gleneagles Medini Hospital, a name synonymous with excellence in its field.
Healthcare & Wellness in Malaysia is a billion dollar industry projected to grow. It is this economic potential that has led the Malaysian government to position healthcare as one of the country’s 12 National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs). Iskandar Investment created the Health & Wellness cluster to capitalise on this opportunity.
Our key catalytic driver project for healthcare is Gleneagles Medini Hospital. Part of the Parkway Pantai Group, Gleneagles is a long-established brand with a reputation for excellence. Gleneagles Medini Hospital will be a fully integrated healthcare facility featuring a 300-bed hospital, nursing home and a rehabilitation centre, developed on 15 acres of prime Medini land.
Medini’s strategic location allows healthcare operators to attract patients from Malaysia, Singapore and the wider region. Malaysia already has a stellar reputation as a medical tourism hub: the country is the most visited medical tourism destination by UK patients, attracting 8.5% of all UK medical tourists. Gleneagles Medini will also be one of the hospitals where Singapore residents can use their Medisave to help pay for their hospitalisation overseas.
Focusing on the wellness segment is the 210-acre Medini Integrated Wellness Capital, developed by Eastern & Oriental Bhd. This fully integrated community will feature a wide array of residential configurations, 18 acres of commercial development and a 12.5-acre wellness sanctuary all bordered by a peaceful mangrove forest.
Complementing the Medini Integrated Wellness Capital is a 4.6 acre urban wellness centre strategically located between the Mall of Medini & Gleneagles Medini Hospital. The centre will boast commercial retail establishments favouring wellness-related concepts, an urban wellness spa, corporate training retreats and serviced apartments.
Surrounding developments include the 80-bed Columbia Asia Hospital. This community hospital is located in Afiat Healthpark, approximately 10 minutes journey by car from Gleneagles Medini Hospital. It has been designed to complement larger hospitals in Iskandar Malaysia by serving patients suffering minor injuries and those requiring short inpatient stays.
“During our bilateral discussions this morning, we stressed on the importance of the industrial working group to meet on regular basis to encourage investors from Singapore to relocate investment here as well as for new investments to take place here in Iskandar. “Iskandar has many attractions as you know. The success of Iskandar had exceeded the regional plan and I am confident that with the support of the Singapore government, the private sector will respond very positively,” he told a joint media conference with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong after the ground-breaking for the two projects.
PM Lee said the Malaysian government had shown a lot of commitment and drive in developing Iskandar Malaysia where a lot of investment have come in including a significant amount of the investments from Singapore.“I believe there is a lot of potential because from Singapore’s point of view we are developing. At the same time, there are a lot of spillovers of what Singapore companies want to expand or companies which want to come to Singapore but can’t quite fit in Singapore and I think Iskandar offers prime opportunities for them,” he said. “As long as the Malaysian government link-up Iskandar with Singapore, there could be good prospects from Singapore’s point of view. We are very happy that it is going to succeed,” he said. He hoped that the wellness development project would become an “oasis” to the people not only from Malaysia and Singapore but also from all over the region to recharge their “batteries” to enjoy and to absorb the spirit of wellness.
